Senior Royalty Analyst

Freehold Royalties Ltd. is seeking candidates for the exciting opportunity of Senior Royalty Analyst.  This position is based in Calgary and reports to the Manager, Compliance.  The successful candidate will support analysis and review of royalty payments to ensure accuracy and identify and address compliance issues with royalty payors along with providing critical support to ensure accurate royalty accruals and cost centre master accuracy, especially in relation to our quickly growing royalty production base in the US, primarily Texas among numerous other states.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide critical support and analysis for our ongoing production analysis process, identifying causes of and liaising with royalty payors to rectify royalty payment deficiencies, including incorrect royalty factors and non-compliance with various other terms of royalty agreements
  • Create and maintain positive and cooperative relations with various royalty stakeholders including royalty payors and various governmental and regulatory bodies
  • Analysis and maintenance of royalty master setups to ensure accuracy and alignment with Land Records (including Net Royalty Interests) and include proper reflection of gas shrinkage rates
  • Provide critical support in the preparation of royalty accruals including responsibility for required updates to royalty master setups including providing corrections/template adjustments to Royalty Accounting as required
  • Responsible for royalty master setups for new acquisitions including analysis of production trends in comparison to forecasts and accounting integration of acquired assets
  • Communicate effectively and cooperatively with Land Administration Team to assure alignment between Land and Accounting records including reconciling causes and solutions to potential breaks between the two sources
  • Conduct ad-hoc reviews of royalty payor statements, comparing to various other public data sources to ensure compliance with the terms of the governing royalty agreements
  • Identify and suggest process improvements and employ big picture thinking to all aspects of this opportunity


  • Minimum 10 years-experience in related royalty or joint venture role
  • Experience with Canadian Freehold and Gross overriding royalties, with exposure to US royalties (especially Texas) considered an asset
  • Advanced Computer skills, especially Excel (including vlookups, pivot tables and macros), Word and PowerPoint.  Exposure to Microsoft Access, Dakota Finance Cube and Royalty Studio (GuildOne) is considered an asset
