Business Development Analyst

Rife is seeking candidates for the position of Business Development Analyst. The position is based in Calgary and reports directly to the VP Business Development.  The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of geology, engineering and land professionals in the Freehold Royalties Business Development team.  The group is uniquely positioned to generate and drive initiatives with the ability to materially impact Freehold Royalties.

The Business Development Analyst will be responsible for monitoring industry activity on Freehold’s US and Canadian acreage. This information will directly inform multiple teams to help make informed corporate decisions. Using multiple data platforms, the successful candidate will analyze and synthesize important trends for the Business Development team, Finance and Royalty Accounting teams and Executive Management. The successful candidate should be analytically driven, with a strong desire to continually improve processes, and drive new and existing initiatives.  The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate with multidisciplinary individuals including Royalty Accounting, Engineering, Geology and Land.

Utilizing large datasets and distilling industry trends is required within fixed deadlines. An open mind who is constantly seeking new and creative solutions is an asset, along with a willingness to engage team members to arrive at the optimal outcome.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the creation of the corporate production forecast and support the preparation of monthly accruals
  • Complete analysis to support, and generate key inputs for:
    • Maintaining corporate well list
    • Maintaining corporate Value Navigator database
    • Performing scenario analysis (commodity price changes, activity levels sensitivities etc.)
  • Liaise between Royalty Accounting, Investor Relations and Business Development teams to ensure key information is passed on for budget forecasting and monthly accruals
  • Tracking industry activity on Freehold’s Canadian and US assets:
    • Weekly reporting of new permits, drilling and completions activity
    • Monitoring drilling rig activity
    • Offsetting activity analysis
  • Coordinate with Land Administration to ensure efficient data transfer and integrity
  • Conduct market analysis within the energy industry, including competitor analysis, key operator research and new well results
  • Update and maintain archive of past royalty acquisition deals
    • Maintain database of deals publicly announced including key indicators and metrics
  • Conduct lookback analysis on internal acquisitions to generate key takeaways and feedback to evaluation process
    • Track actuals vs forecast (activity, production, revenue)


  • 5+ years of experience in a related field
  • Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma with quantitative focus desired (Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Business, Data Science, Geology)
  • Experience coordinating with accounting groups considered an asset
  • Data analytics experience/education an asset
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft BI), and data analytics software
  • Experience using, Value Navigator or other petroleum economics and planning software
  • Familiarity with GeoScout and the Enverus Prism platform would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrable ability to work with large, unrefined datasets
  • Direct business development /corporate development exposure an asset
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet critical deadlines, while managing multiple priorities
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams, and a clear ability to communicate effectively with all levels of an organization

What does our hybrid work pilot program look like?

  • Combination of in-office and remote work: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are core in-office work days, Monday and Friday in-office or remote based on your preference
  • Flexible work hours, while committing to being available during our core hours of 9:00am – 3:00pm

If you choose to participate in the hybrid work pilot program, you will:

  • Be provided with a Rife computer or laptop when working in the office
  • Need to have access to a personal computer when working from home (unless assigned a Rife laptop - dependent on business need).
  • Have a high-speed internet connection with a minimum of 50 Mbps for downloads and 30 Mbps for uploads when working remotely
